Split the README into a short front page and task-oriented pages under
docs/: installation, user guide, CLI reference, configuration and
troubleshooting, with an index in docs/README.md. Rewrite RECOVERY.md
around Continue This Backup Here and Restore Folders, and DEVELOPMENT.md
around running, debugging and releasing from source.
Bring ARCHITECTURE.md up to date with the read path, push events, the
thread map, conflict copies and the machine profile, and move the feature
design notes there. Collect planned work in ROADMAP.md. Link the threat
model from SECURITY.md and the translation rules from CONTRIBUTING.md.
Add scripts/publish-wiki.sh, which mirrors the user pages to the GitHub
wiki with rewritten links and only pushes with --push.
The app and the tray stop polling. pdfs-core adds Request::Subscribe: the
connection stays open and carries Event lines (status, transfers, and
Changed with a Topic), with a heartbeat while quiet. In pdfs-fuse, an
EventHub gives each subscriber a mailbox, code that changes something
publishes its topic, and a sampler publishes the status, transfers and sync
progress when they differ. The app follows the feed on one thread, paints
status and transfers as they arrive, and reloads the page on screen when its
topic changes, including after changes made with the pdfs CLI. A hidden
window keeps the changes and catches up when focused. Front-ends fall back
to polling a daemon that predates subscriptions. Refresh buttons leave the
page headers; F5 and Ctrl+R still reload from the server.
Photos gets a scrubber overlaid on the right edge of the timeline in place
of the slider and scrollbar. It shows the years, appears when the pointer
comes near or the timeline scrolls, names the month under the pointer and
jumps to it on drag. Upload becomes a split button whose menu holds the
Google Photos import. Tiles are pooled per row and rebound instead of
rebuilt, hover scales the thumbnail to 1.02 without a shadow, and tiles
lose their tooltip.
On libadwaita 1.8 or newer the app uses AdwSpinner, AdwToggleGroup,
AdwButtonRow and AdwShortcutsDialog, and keeps look-alike stand-ins on
older releases (src/compat.rs, widgets/compat.rs). It still builds against
libadwaita 1.5 and picks at run time, creating the newer widgets by class
name through GtkBuilder, so every package gets them. PDFS_STAND_IN_WIDGETS
forces the stand-ins.
The Sync and share-link icons draw in full again: GTK drops group
transforms from symbolic icons, so their coordinates are baked into the
paths. All catalogs are updated and complete.
The Sync page gets Overview, Folders and History views under a switcher in
the header. Overview holds the status card, conflicts, transfers and the
queue; Folders holds the folder list, with Add Folder and a popover that
explains the sync modes; History is the former Activity page, which leaves
the sidebar. A banner in Folders and History points back to Overview when
changes fail or conflict.
Activity hides save-by-rename temporaries (pdfs-core gains
syncignore::is_scratch_name), with a toggle to show them again. Runs of
similar events fold into one expandable row, "Show Older" pages further back
through what the daemon keeps, and titles and details are translated
sentences built from the daemon's targets instead of its raw text.
Conflict copies say when they were made.
Computers lists every device in one group, this computer first with a
"This computer" pill; its row opens Sync's folder list. Another computer's
row browses its backup read-only in the shared file list, and its menu
offers Browse Files, Restore, Rename, "Continue This Backup Here…" (the old
identity adoption, now explained in its dialog) and Remove. Subtitles read
"last backup" or "no backups yet", and an empty list links to the download
page. DirEntry derives Default for the browse view's synthesized entries.
The sidebar shows badges for sync problems and waiting invitations, polled
every five minutes away from their pages. All catalogs are updated and
complete.
The list and grid view from My files moves into widgets/file_list.rs as
FileList, so Trash, Shared with me and Shared by me share its columns,
selection, context menus, keyboard handling and list/grid switch instead of
each drawing its own rows.
Trash shows where each item came from and when it was deleted. Proton does
not expose the trash time through the SDK yet, so the daemon records when it
first sees a node in the trash (migration V35, trash_seen) and reports that;
the date becomes exact once proton-sdk-rs exposes Node::trash_time. Restoring
offers a Show action, and opening a trashed item explains that it needs to be
restored first.
Shared with me splits files and saved links into two views. Files show who
shared them, with a warning pill for unverified senders, the access they give
and when they were shared. Pending invitations sit in a banner that opens a
dialog to accept or decline each one. Several items can be left at once.
Saved links get their own list with open, copy and remove actions.
Shared by me gains a filter (all, links, people, expired links) and columns
for location, people and link state, with a copy button for live links.
Several items can stop being shared at once, the page refreshes after the
share dialog closes, and a reload rebinds only the rows that changed so the
selection survives.
All catalogs are updated and complete.
Pages no longer swap their content for a "Loading…" status on every load.
A new Loader keeps the last rows on screen and only shows the loading
state if the reply takes longer than 300 ms; a newer load always
supersedes an older one, so a late reply is dropped instead of painted.
Reloading what is on screen keeps it usable; loading something else greys
the old rows out and clears the selection, since their paths would
resolve against the new folder.
My files, search results and Trash now swap only the rows that changed,
so selection, scroll position and thumbnails survive a refresh. Activity
is one sectioned ListView: open conflicts first, then a section per day,
with the filter bar pinned above the list.
Polls give up after 5 s instead of 120 s. A daemon that is running but
doesn't answer now reads as "Not responding" in the app and the tray
rather than as disconnected.
The Sync page gives each folder one card with its state, a Synced /
Online only switch and a menu for the rest; switching either way asks
first and the download prompt shows the free space on the disk.
Enabling, disabling and restarting the Proton Drive service ran
systemctl on GTK's main thread and froze the window. They now run in
the background, and every Retry button goes through one shared restart
helper.
Ten icons are bundled under resources/icons for glyphs no stock theme
has or that read ambiguously (sync, share, people, link, menu, map and
so on). A new test fails when the app or search prompt asks for a
symbolic icon that is neither bundled nor on a list checked against
Adwaita 50, libadwaita and GTK, or when a bundled icon is missing from
the resource manifest. The tray's sync icon, which Adwaita 50 no longer
ships, is now view-refresh.
Wording follows one glossary, recorded in docs/TRANSLATING.md: "Proton
Drive service" instead of "mount service" or "daemon", "Online only"
instead of "On-demand", "Proton Drive folder" instead of "mountpoint".
Dialog headings and buttons use title case and page titles match the
sidebar. Dates go through one formatter (app/dates.rs) and sizes
through i18n::human_bytes, and the cache label is translated.
The status tick stops while the window is hidden or minimized and runs
every fifth tick while it is unfocused, refreshing as soon as it gains
focus. "Sync complete" is announced only for large batches and only
when the window isn't focused. Smaller fixes: Empty Trash hides when
there is nothing to empty, copy buttons confirm with a check mark, the
sidebar status spins until the first report, and Photos moves Import
and Find Duplicates into a menu beside a labelled Select toggle.
All catalogs are updated and complete.
actions/checkout@v4, actions/upload-artifact@v4 and
softprops/action-gh-release@v2 still target Node.js 20, which the runners
now force onto Node.js 24 with a deprecation warning. Their current majors
(checkout v7, upload-artifact v7, action-gh-release v3) run on Node.js 24.
The duplicate finder gains an Exact / Similar switch. Similar asks the
daemon for PhotoSimilar, which starts a background pass that hashes the
thumbnail of every shot not hashed yet and replies at once with the sets
found so far and how far hashing has got. The dialog shows a progress bar
and asks again until the pass is done, then lists the sets.
The pass takes thumbnails from the server only: a photo without one is
skipped for the run instead of downloaded whole, and the dialog says how
many photos could not be compared. Decoding and hashing are spread over
the machine's cores.
Every similar photo starts ticked Keep, since photos that look alike can
be different shots. A similar photo stands for its whole shot, so one not
kept goes to Trash with the rest of its shot.
A 64-bit difference hash of each thumbnail, stored in the new
photos.similar_hash column (schema 34), and the queries the similar-photo
finder needs: what is left to hash, progress, and the sets of shots that
look alike. Sets made only of byte-identical copies are left to the
duplicate finder. A refresh keeps a hash unless the photo's bytes changed.
The daemon pass, the control request and the GUI are not built yet; see
PLAN.md.
- The Proton accent preference becomes a whole Proton theme that also
holds against a GTK theme imported from gtk.css; folders get Proton's
purple folder icon while it is on.
- Places map markers show one of each town's photos with a count, and
zoomed in on a town every photo sits where it was taken
(Request::PlaceLocations). Photos taken on one spot are listed in a
popover. "Show on map" in the photo viewer goes to the Places map.
- The built-in map draws country borders, sea and land in their own
colours.
- An opt-in street map from OpenFreeMap (vector tiles drawn with cairo,
cached on disk up to 256 MB), with the OpenStreetMap credit on the map
and in About.
- Translations for all catalogs; changelog folded into 2.3.0.
The Places view gets a Grid/Map toggle. The map shows a bubble per town,
sized by its number of photos, over the outline of the world's land. Towns
whose bubbles would overlap merge into one that counts all their photos, and
clicking it zooms in until they part; clicking a single town opens it like a
card does. Drag to pan, scroll or pinch to zoom, and the buttons zoom in,
zoom out or frame every place again. Hovering names the town, or the first
few towns of a merged bubble.
No tile server is involved: none that is free has terms allowing an app like
this one to use it. The map is drawn from Natural Earth's 1:50m land
polygons (public domain), trimmed and simplified by
scripts/natural-earth-land.py into crates/pdfs-gui/data/land.txt, in Web
Mercator. The About dialog credits Natural Earth.
PlaceInfo carries the town's latitude and longitude; a daemon older than the
map sends none, and its towns are left off the map.
The first timeline refresh after the Places update reads the metadata of
the whole library, and until it is done the Places view has nothing to show
and no sign that anything is happening.
The refresh now records how many photos it has resolved out of how many,
counting photos read by an earlier pass as done. Response::Places carries
it as mapping (absent from older daemons, which parse as None). The Places
view shows "Mapping photos: 120 of 480" with a bar while it is set, asks
again every two seconds, and loads the new places once the pass ends. An
empty listing during the pass says the photos are being mapped rather than
that there are no places.
The strip sat above the timeline's list and was hidden as soon as the list
left its top. Hiding it grew the viewport, which moved the list back to its
top and brought the strip back, so scrolling up near the top shook the whole
page between the two heights.
The strip is now the first row of the list (GalleryRow::Memories), so it
scrolls away with the grid and never resizes the viewport. It is still only
there atop the whole, unfiltered timeline.
Photos now know where they were taken. proton-drive-rs 0.7.0 reads the
Location from a photo's extended attributes, and the timeline refresh stores
it with the photo (schema v33). The migration marks every photo unresolved
once, so the next refresh backfills locations from node metadata without
downloading anything.
Towns are looked up offline: pdfs-core bundles GeoNames' cities15000 table,
trimmed by scripts/geonames-cities.py, and files each photo under the
nearest town within 50 km. The new PhotoPlaces and PlacePhotos requests list
the towns and page one town's photos.
The Photos page gets a third view, Places, with a card per town (newest
photo, town, country, count). A place opens in the gallery like an album.
Country names come translated from the iso-codes catalogs, now an optional
dependency. The About dialog credits GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).
Favorites, "not in an album" and the month move from separate pills and a
dropdown into a Filters popover next to the kind tabs. The kind tabs stay
in the row because their counts are worth a glance. The button carries a
badge with the number of active filters, kind included, and the popover
has a "Clear filters" action that resets everything in one reload.
Flipping a filter while a page was still loading used to drop the reload,
leaving the timeline answering the old filter. The request is now queued
and the stale page is discarded.
A "Find duplicates" button in the Photos header opens a review of every
set of files that share a content hash. Each set shows its copies side by
side with a Keep toggle; the copy in the most albums, then in the larger
RAW+JPEG group, then the oldest, is kept by default, and a set can't lose
its last kept copy. The copies not kept move to Trash one file at a time.
- core: Db::photo_duplicates, Request::PhotoDuplicates, and a files_only
flag on TrashNodes (defaults to false, so old clients still trash whole
groups).
- core: deleting a group's representative now clears the group key of its
remaining files instead of leaving them pointing at a missing uid.
- fuse: handlers for both requests.
Add a PhotosOnThisDay control request, served from the stored timeline:
photos whose local capture date matches today's in earlier years, one
row per group. The GUI shows a card per year ("3 years ago") with the
year's newest photo as its cover; clicking a card scrolls the timeline
to that day. The strip is revealed only at the top of the whole,
unfiltered timeline, so it gives the grid its room back once you
scroll or filter.
Lay the timeline out as a grid of square tiles that spans the
scrolled window's width exactly, instead of justified rows sized from
learned aspect ratios. Track the width from the horizontal adjustment
so the widest row can no longer push the window wider, and put the
scrubber beside the list rather than over it.
Load the app stylesheet above user priority: a theme imported from the
user's gtk.css padded every button, tiles included. Keep the top photo
at its screen offset across a relayout, and only drop thumbnail
requests the unbound row still owns.
A new top-bar button, or F5, plays the loaded photos as a slideshow: it goes
fullscreen, hides the controls and moves on every five seconds. A video plays
to its end first, and the slideshow waits for each photo to load before it
starts counting. Stepping by hand restarts the count. Escape stops the
slideshow instead of closing the viewer, and fullscreen is left only if the
slideshow entered it. The slideshow ends on the last photo of the timeline.
Zooming out now changes how the timeline is sectioned: by day at the default
row height, by month further out and by year at the smallest tiles, which
gain one more zoom step. Under a month or year heading the tile caption shows
the day instead of the clock time.
Shift+click selects every photo from the last one clicked, and dragging
across the timeline selects the photos swept over, scrolling at the top and
bottom edges. Sweeping back gives photos up again.
A new pill next to the favorites filter narrows the timeline to the photos
no album of ours holds yet, so what is left to file is easy to find. A
RAW+JPEG pair counts as filed when any of its files is in an album.
PhotosTimeline gains an optional not_in_album flag; older front-ends omit it
and get the whole timeline. Album contents are fetched lazily, so the first
filtered page fetches the contents of any album not yet listed. Photos added
to an album while the filter is on leave the timeline at once.
The sidebar header and the login page used the generic folder-remote-symbolic
icon. Ship the app icon from packaging/ in the GUI resources and use it in
both places, so the in-app brand matches the launcher even when the app runs
uninstalled.
The conflict sweep flagged divergent copies anywhere in the tree but kept its
dedupe set in memory, so every daemon start logged them again. The conflict
listing only covered My Files, so copies in on-demand sync folders were never
listed, and the Activity page showed them as resolved while they were still on disk.
List copies in synced folders by their absolute local path, route resolves
to the mount that serves them, flag only what the listing can show, and
consult the activity log before flagging a copy again.
Add a copyright line with contact address, links to the source code and
to Proton's terms of service and privacy policy, a Legal section with the
full non-affiliation, trademark and no-warranty disclaimer, and a license
credit for proton-sdk-rs. Translated into every shipped language.
makepkg --printsrcinfo does not run pkgver(), so the -git .SRCINFO kept
the version from when the package was created and push.sh never had a
change to publish. update.sh now runs makepkg -od --noprepare first so
pkgver() writes the current git describe version into the PKGBUILD.
Videos without a server thumbnail fell through to the local fallback,
which downloaded the whole file, failed to decode it as an image and
wrote the video off for good. Grab one frame with ffmpeg instead, a
second in or from the start for shorter clips. Probe for ffmpeg before
downloading, bound every run, and skip videos over 256 MiB.
Migration V32 gives the videos written off so far another try.
Those videos had no server thumbnail because our uploads never sent one.
Every upload path (bulk upload, drained mount writes, conflict copies,
new revisions and folder sync) now attaches a thumbnail rendered from
the local file, kept under the 60 KiB Proton's own clients use. Files
that are not images or videos, or cannot be decoded, upload bare as
before; a .ts file only counts as video with an MPEG-TS sync byte.
ffmpeg is a new optional dependency in the PKGBUILDs.
The month scrubber sat under the overlay scrollbar, which widens under
the pointer, so the two collided. Keep the scrubber clear of it.
The gallery jumped when thumbnails loaded, on zoom and on tab switches.
Relayout anchored on the first bound row, but ListView keeps off-screen
rows bound with stale allocations, and scroll_to on an off-screen row
aligns it to the top. Anchor on the first mapped row that is actually
visible instead.
The viewer's details panel opened empty: the title's hexpand propagated
up to the revealer, which then took all the width. Set hexpand on the
revealer explicitly.
EXIF details read like a camera: Make, Model and Lens lose their EXIF
quotes, a model that already names its maker is not repeated, shutter
speeds are rounded (1/19 s), and ISO is labelled.
A write that lands while a revision is on the wire cancels that upload
through the flag CountingReader checks before each read. The cancel was
reported as ErrorKind::Interrupted, which every read loop retries,
including the SDK's read_full_block. The flag never clears, so the drain
thread spun at 100% CPU forever and the transfer stayed listed as
uploading at 0 bytes until the daemon restarted. A growing browser
download (.crdownload) triggers it naturally.
Report the cancel as ErrorKind::Other so the SDK fails the upload;
drain_revision already treats a cancelled upload as abandoned, not
failed. Tracked as B98.
A release tag now updates and pushes all three AUR packages once the
GitHub release exists, then commits the refreshed recipes back to main.
A push to main that changes the -git recipe publishes that package
alone; plain upstream commits need no AUR push because its pkgver()
follows git at build time.
Needs the AUR_SSH_PRIVATE_KEY repository secret.
The All/Photos/Videos/Raw tabs, the "12 photos" subtitle and the
"No favorite videos in June 2024" heading were still built from English
literals. Each heading is now a whole translatable sentence with a
{month} placeholder, and the subtitle uses plural forms.
Also fill in the French "Documents" search chip, which was left
untranslated because it matches the English word.
