Alt never reached the app, so the tile keys are Ctrl-h/j/k/l and
Ctrl-Shift-h/j/k/l, taken before vim sees them, and h/l walk the tiles
while reading. Ctrl-Q lowers the scratchpad from the editor straight
into the last note, and raises it back to the document, still writing.
The drawer sits in the porthole's opening with a full rim. The board,
the agenda, the calendar and a card's back live on a plan screen that
S goes to and comes back from, so documents and views never share the
screen. The calendar fits its tile instead of scrolling.
The Workspace class held every piece of client state in one 2500-line
file. It is now a root that composes nine parts, each in web/src/lib/state/:
- tree: spaces, folders, the list, search, marks, and what is done to nodes
- tiles: the tiles on screen, the focus trail, and the views among them
- drafts: document drafts and autosave, and text written in place
- cards: the board, the agenda, the card back, and the card verbs
- diary: today's entry, the calendar, stepping between days
- scratch: the scratchpad drawer and its ways out
- sheets: what floats over the tiles, and what each sheet lists
- vault: the vault status and unlocking
- prompts: the [y/N] question, the password box, Proton's check
The root keeps what belongs to no one part: the session, the status
line, guard, what has the focus, and the focused tile's open/draft/
editing. The keyboard layer still sees one `workspace`; call sites read
`workspace.cards.card`, `workspace.tree.nodes` and so on. Behaviour is
unchanged.
An upload while writing is now a file node of the document, through
POST /nodes/{id}/files, instead of a loose row of media that only the media
browser listed. It moves, seals, goes to the trash and comes back with the
document. Migration 0029 gives every embedded upload that had no node a
place under the document that embeds it (a living one before a trashed
one), keeping its media id, so no body changes; the sealed-folder triggers
now ask a document's folder for the files under it.
- nodes: `holds` and `place_for` say what may go where; a document holds
files and nothing else, in moves, uploads and restores from the trash.
A loaded document carries its files and whether its folder seals them.
- seal: a document moving into a sealed folder seals its files first.
- media: POST /media, GET /media and DELETE /media/{id} are gone, and with
them MediaBrowser and :media.
- import: `plan/` beside `plan.md` comes back as the document's files, the
shape export writes; an older export's media/ goes to the first document
that embeds each file.
- sftp: a document's files are `<slug>/` beside its `.md`, listed once it
has any, holding files only, moving with the `.md`.
- web: paste, drop and :upload while reading go to the document; the info
sheet has a files section (Enter opens, i embeds, y copies how); the list
shows +N on a document, za folds its files open, p drops marked files in.
A note now leaves the scratchpad by becoming something else: `K` keeps it
as a document, as before; `C` makes it a card where `:card` would put one,
the first line its title; `A` opens `:append` with the document on screen
filled in, Tab completing any other title, and puts the note at its end.
`/api/capture` takes `to: "note"` and `to: "document"` (named as a link
names it), and `note`, the scratch note the text came from, dropped once
the text has landed. Appending keeps the revision before it and indexes
links and media, as a save does.
Migration 0028 adds `scratch_fts`; `GET /api/scratch?q=` searches it, and
`/` lists note hits under "notes" after the cards, Enter lowering the
drawer at the note.
The `c` capture line cycles its target with Tab: a card, a note, or a
timed line in today's entry, which `:today <text>` now writes.
A document now lists the cards about it: the ones whose notes it is and
the ones whose description links to it. GET /nodes/{id}/cards answers
that, and the node itself carries it as `cards`. A line under the
document's meta line says what is still open and when it is first due;
it and `gc` open a new cards part of the info sheet, where j/k picks a
card, Space, H/L, D, a and `:` act on it, and Enter turns it over on its
board. `c` while reading a document makes a card about it.
Card verbs act on the card in focus wherever it is looked at: the
board's cursor, the card turned over, the agenda's highlight, the card
picked in the info sheet, or a document's only open card. patchCard,
sendCard and toggleDone take that card, so patchAgendaCard,
sendAgendaCard and finishCard are gone, and :due, :repeat, :label and
:done no longer refuse to run away from the board.
Migration 0027 adds card_links, links for a card's description: indexed
on every write, backfilled on start, followed and rewritten on a rename
or move like a document's, and claimed when a title they named appears.
It also adds cards_fts over title, description and checklist steps;
GET /cards?q= searches it, and / lists the cards found after the nodes,
Enter turning one over on its board.
Every overlay is drawn in Sheet.svelte: the header, the close button, the
footer of keys and the list cursor kept on screen, written once instead of
in ten copies. Overlays open and close through openSheet and closeSheet.
The outline, history and backlinks sheets and the share bar are one info
sheet with a part for each, Tab between them. gi opens it, gO, gh and gb open
it at their part, and so does a click on the line under the title. The
buttons in the document header are gone; the meta line says when the
document is public, and a phone gets edit and info under the text.
`file_text::catch_up` read every file without a row, which after a write meant
walking every file node there is to find the one or two just put in. It now
takes the part of the tree to look in: an upload asks about the folder it went
into, an import about the folder it was poured into, an SFTP save about the
folder it landed in, a decrypt about what was decrypted. Only an import at the
root and the pass at start look at everything.
The excerpt of a file found by its text marks each matched word between
U+0002 and U+0003, which no text file has a use for, and the list draws them
lit. A cut through a match leaves an opening without its close, and the rest
is lit to the end rather than the marker shown.
The screenshots are taken again, so the search one shows it.
The text of every file in the tree that is text, by its type or by its
first 8 KiB reading as UTF-8 without a NUL, now goes into `file_text` and a
second FTS5 index beside the documents', up to its first 256 KiB, the same
part the viewer shows. A search asks both, lists a node found in both once,
and marks a file found by its text with `in_text`; the list shows the words
around the match under its name.
There is one way in, `file_text::catch_up`, which reads every unsealed file
that has no row yet. An upload, an import, an SFTP save and a decrypt call
it once their own transaction is done, and the server runs it at start for
anything that slipped past. A file that is not text gets an empty row, so it
is read once and not again.
The triggers keep it honest the other way. New bytes drop the old text, so
an SFTP save is read again, and `:encrypt` writes a file under a new media
id, so its plaintext is gone in the same statement that seals it. The text
of a sealed file is refused outright, whatever path tries to store it;
otherwise it would sit in `diary.db` and its mirror beside the sealed bytes.
PDFs and office documents are not read: their text needs a parser this
binary does not carry.
`L` or Shift-Enter on a row opens it in a tile of its own; Enter and `l`
still open it in the focused tile. Right of the list the tiles share the
space as hyprland's dwindle does: two side by side, a third splits the
newer one, and so on. Each keeps its own scroll position and its own
editor, and the keys act on the focused one. A document already open in a
tile is focused there rather than opened twice, so two drafts of it can
never overwrite each other.
Alt-h/j/k/l moves the focus to the tile that way, out of the editor too,
and Alt-h past the leftmost tile focuses the list as before. With Shift
the tile itself moves, swapping places with its neighbour. `gt` / `gT` and
`:bn` / `:bp` cycle the tiles, `:ls` lists them, `:b <n or name>` focuses
one, `:close` (Alt-q) closes one, asking first when its draft could not be
written, and `:only` closes the rest. `:b` was the board's alias; `:board`
is spelled out now. `:next` / `:prev` still walk the list. `q` on a
document closes its tile when there are several. `f` fullscreens the
focused tile.
Each space remembers its tiles, as it remembered its one document. A
card's notes open in a tile beside whatever was being read, and `q` there
takes the tile away again on the way back to the board. Under 768px only
the focused tile is shown. The status line says which tile has focus.
m now adds the row under the cursor to a set of marks and steps on, so
mmm picks up three; M takes the whole folder, Esc or :unmark puts it all
back. Marks stay while the list walks, so they can be gathered from
several folders. p, :mv and Shift+digit move the whole set.
With a pointer, Ctrl- or Cmd-click marks a row and Shift-click every row
from the cursor to it. Rows drag onto a folder row, a crumb or a space
pill; a marked row carries every marked node with it.
POST /api/nodes/move takes { ids, parent_id } and moves them all or
none: every node is checked before any moves, sealing into a sealed
folder happens before the one transaction that moves them, and two of a
name get slugs of their own. The single move goes the same way.
`:encrypt` on a folder sealed the files in it once; whatever arrived
afterwards was plaintext. A folder or space that is encrypted now
carries `sealed` (0015), and so does every folder under it, so "is
this place sealed?" is one column of the parent. What lands there is
sealed on the way in, or refused with 423 while the vault is shut:
- uploads, with or without `?encrypt`, encrypted as they stream
- imports, sealed where they lie before any row names them
- SFTP writes, sealed out of their `.part`, and refused at the open
when the vault is shut
- files and folders moved in, through the web or SFTP: seal::enter
seals them first and the move happens only if that worked
Triggers make it hold for any path: a folder made inside a sealed one
is sealed, and a file node whose media is not encrypted cannot be
inserted into or moved into a sealed folder (a 400, not a 500).
Decrypting the sealed folder lifts the flag on its subtree and opens
its files; a file or folder inside it cannot be decrypted on its own.
An empty folder can be sealed. Documents are not files and stay as
they are.
The list shows a lock on sealed folders, the touch menu offers to
unseal one, and an upload or import into one asks for the vault
password first. Tests cover sealing, inheritance, the trigger, moves
with the vault open and shut, unsealing, an SFTP write and an import.
PUT /api/nodes/{id} takes base_updated_at and answers 409 when the node
was saved since; the editor sends it, so a save from another tab, the
phone or the SFTP mount is no longer overwritten in silence. :w! and
:wq! now force the write.
An autosave the server could not take is kept and retried with backoff,
and at once on the online event; network failures say "the server
cannot be reached" rather than "Failed to fetch". At boot that is no
longer shown as a login screen. A session that expires mid-edit shows
the login with a note, and logging back in resumes the open draft.
Folder listings and the media list are read page by page, so more than
500 children are no longer cut off. Search results carry the space and
folder they sit in, and the overview's recent list includes files.
Embedding uploads report progress, like uploads into a folder.
On touch devices vim is off by default. Each row has an actions sheet
(rename, move, share, seal, delete), folders start with a .. row, and
the dock gains today's entry, upload, search all spaces, drop for a
marked node, help, and the board's list, reorder, rename and delete.
The agenda gets a done button per card and a button for today's entry.
Sharing a folder or a file is refused in the client. :mv .. in a search
moves up from the match's own folder. Files dropped outside the list or
editor no longer navigate the tab away. The public share view renders
/n/ links as plain text, and tells a network error from a dead link.
Argon2id turns the vault password into a key that seals a random master
key; only the sealed copy is kept. Each file gets its own key, sealed
under the master key in its header with its media id, and its bytes are
AES-256-GCM STREAM records, so a swapped, cut or altered file refuses
to open. Uploads with ?encrypt=true are sealed as they stream in.
:vault, :unlock, :lock, :passwd, :encrypt, :decrypt and :upload! drive
it. The vault locks after WORKSPACE_VAULT_IDLE_MIN idle minutes, on
logout and on restart; while locked, sealed files answer 423, share
links never serve them, and :export! refuses rather than leave them out.
Sealing an existing file rewrites it under a new id and retires the old
one: the mirror deletes the plaintext from Proton Drive outright,
trash included, whatever WORKSPACE_BACKUP_PRUNE says, and drops it from
the readable files/ view. The mirror now compares on-disk sizes, so
sealed files are not re-hashed every run.
A file node points at one media row and owns it the way a document owns
what it embeds, so folder deletes, the media browser and exports keep
working. POST /api/nodes/{id}/files streams uploads into a folder;
imports turn non-markdown files into file nodes; exports put them at
their tree path. The browser previews images, video, audio and text,
offers the rest as a download, and takes files dropped on the list.
Migration 0010 widens the kind CHECK by editing the stored schema, as
SQLite documents for loosening a constraint: sqlx runs migrations in a
transaction, where foreign keys cannot be switched off for a rebuild.
GET /api/agenda gathers unfinished cards from every board that are late,
due within a week, or in hand, plus whether the diary has today; the
reminder mail and the agenda share one diary check. t opens it (and it
opens itself once a day when something is late or due), T writes today's
entry, the bar counts late and due cards, Ctrl-P searches every space,
and a document o made that is left empty is removed on the way out.
- shared view uses the bar, porthole and status band; outline gets its own
window on wide screens; j/k, gg/G, Ctrl-d/u scroll with a vim-style ruler
- rail doors are line icons in groups with hover tooltips and keycaps
- phone: number-only space pills, no nested rims, icon dock, toast messages,
back button and one-line meta in the document header
- keycaps (.kbd) wherever keys are shown, styled scrollbars in Chrome,
outline tracks position on jumps, breakpoints unified at 767px
The diary grows into a workspace: a flat list of dated entries becomes a
tree of spaces, and the app is renamed to match what it now is.
Spaces and nodes
One recursive `nodes` table replaces `entries`: a space is a root node,
and folders and documents nest under it without limit. Entries keep
their ids through the migration, so share tokens, media links and the
drafts in localStorage all still resolve.
Folder import
A folder or a zip is uploaded as a document tree. Markdown becomes
documents titled from their first heading, everything else becomes
media, and relative links between the imported files are rewritten to
the paths they landed at, so a set of cross-linked notes stays
navigable after the upload.
Boards
A kanban board per space, with the space as the board: lists, cards,
due dates and an optional link to a document. `diary` has none.
Mail
SMTP notifications through an outbox. A mail is enqueued under a key
naming the occurrence it belongs to, so a restart cannot resend and a
relay that refuses is retried with a widening backoff. Four kinds: the
diary reminder, cards due and overdue, a weekly digest, and logins
from a browser that has not been seen before or a burst of failures.
All of it is dormant until WORKSPACE_SMTP_URL is set.
Rename
Everything user-visible says workspace; everything that already exists
outside this repo keeps its name, because renaming it would break a
running deployment for tidiness alone: the database file, the docker
volume, the session cookie, the Proton device, the keyring entry and
the localStorage keys. Configuration reads WORKSPACE_* first and falls
back to DIARY_*, so the deployed .env keeps working untouched.
Single-user diary served as one Rust binary with the Svelte frontend
embedded.
- axum 0.8 + SQLite (sqlx), migrations run at startup
- stateless HMAC session cookie; credentials from .env, compared in
constant time
- FTS5 full-text search, user input rewritten into quoted prefix terms
- media uploads linked to entries by scanning bodies for /api/media/<id>,
which scopes share-token media access and entry deletion
- unguessable share links (192-bit token) serving a public read-only page
- vim keybindings via CodeMirror plus a modal browse layer and : command
line; disabled on touch devices
